I think the "on demand" technology for new movies will be the big hit of the near future. What fun to see a movie before it is released to the general public( if you have the money to pay for it) Get the whole group together and watch the new movie. This would really go over well for a group like Trekkies or Harry Potter fans. I do not follow new technology, so alot of this information was new to me.

2. I am not an early adopter of new gadgets. I must be forced into the next new technology. At home we still watch videos,(yes we have a working videos machine) and we still enjoy watching our collection of videos. I remember Sunday afternoons, taking a hour or two, going through the Sunday newspaper, enjoying the cartoons, the Parade, looking at all the wedding and engagement announcements, catching up on the world news.(please do not take note of the order of my favorite parts of the paper)Now I never have time to do this. I might get online and check the front page of the Sunday paper but I never find the time like I did 2, 5 or 10 years ago.

iHCPL #80: Movies

1.I watched(10 minutes)of the movie "The Cowboy and the Lady" 1938. Starring Gary Cooper, a 1 hour and 31 minutes movie. I was on the website IMDB. If I was at home, I would watch a movie on the TV set. If I was traveling, on a airplane or car, yes I would watch a movie on a computer.

2.I could not get into Apple Trailers, I had to load something onto the computer.I got into IMDB and watched 3 trailers: "Leaves of Grass", "Toy Story 3" and "Valentine's Day". Very easy to do, and yes I will use this site to keep current of the films I am interested in.

3.No I would not use any of the fee-based services to watch a movie at home. To much movement going
on, fun to look at for a second or two but after that my eyes started to
hurt.
Of the two sites, I like Truveo the best. To me this site is easier to move around in. User-Friendly design!

2.I watched lots of the HCPL videos. Lots of fun events and programs have been going on here at HCPL. I really liked the video named "How Not to Reserve a Computer or Laptop at the Library." I bet the kids had a ball acting in it! Freeman has 3 or 4 videos with instructions on how to do things around the library which would be very helpful to the customers. We need to do this at Barbara Bush. (Yes, I know the Video committee is working on this) The videos on book reviews were good too. I really liked the ones titled "Check it Out" Again this is something we could do. Also, doing some videos on the childrens Programs could be done.
All for now, Cindy

iHCPL #77: Images

1. I have poked, superpoked, send flowers, passed a drink and more. I was surprised to see all the different applications you could use and send.

4. 10 Privacy settings every Facebook user should know is a must read. I learned alot from that reading. Facebook should have this information on the first page of its site.

A person could be on Facebook all day. I would get very bored. I still like to see and hear my family and friends. Plus Facebook is so slow. I go into Facebook one or two times a day. Stay logged into it for 10-20 minutes. I do not really have a favorite application. What I discovered was how many applications there are, over 10 pages. Who has time to do it all?? Who would want to do it all? I read the article and took the credit score quiz. I got an 80% on the quiz. Not bad, not good. I missed the Fair Isaac and Co., the company who develped the score system and one more.( I can not remember the second one I missed) The 2 parts most interesting to me was the Credit Score Breakdown and Improving Your Score.
How they use all the information in the credit history, how they break it down to percents was very interesting. 10% on new credit and 15% on the length of time you've had credit are new to me. And I did not know that keeping old credit accounts open, even if you are not using them, was good for Improving your Score.

2. Do we have a budget? Well, yes we do, a very loose budget. We do not write everything down that we purchase. But we know we can not go out everyday to the mall and go crazy. We know what bills to pay when and how much goes into the saving accounts. I had a budget when I was in college. Not a extra penny to my name. It was very hard. Seeing some kids go out shopping and you know you can't do any extra shopping that week. Not any fun.

3. I have never looked at the TCDRS site. Soooo everything on the site was new to me. I would be able to look at my personal account, find forms and publications on retiring. And in the Resources link, I could send days looking at all the different links to help me out with retirement. I did not setup an account for now. Maybe in a couple of year from now.

Money & Finance #58

1. My bank does offer free online banking but we are not signed up for it. I am hoping in the near future we will do this. Some of the online services are, financial calculators, secure banking forms and links to other areas of interest. A person can view checking and savings accounts, tranfers, pay bills and see alerts on your accounts. Security is very important. Prior to being logged in, I might be required to anwser 1 of 3 security questions I have previously chosen. I may use a virtual security device to enter my password after submitting my login ID as normal.

2. I looked at Wesbae and Foonance. Wesbae would be the one I would use. I watched and listen to the 3 minute video. The Wesbas Group looked like a interesting way to learn what the general opinion is on different subjects. At this time, I do not see us using this.

3. We already do a few of the things listed to reduce cost like purchase store brands, we use generic drugs and we have a multipolicy discount for insurane on our home and auto. I would like to get some of the florescent bulbs for our home, but I have heard that they need to be recycled after they burn out. I would have to find a place to do this. We have always check Consumer Report for big ticket items. I have never gone onto the internet to check for prices. I will have to do this next time we are buying something.

Spring Cleaning #30

I have saved items to the S drive before, so I have done step 1 in the exercise. I looked at the P drive and found somethings that were no longer in use. The Form Folder had old and second, third copies of forms that I have deleted. But I did not feel I could just delete them without asking Annette first. We decided together that we could delete them, whick I have done. A person could get into trouble deleting items on a branch drive. Some of the oldest forms I deleted were from 8/2003.

My personal folder on the z drive is organized.(I think) I can find posters and flyers I have made in the past pretty fast. I like the idea of making GTDs easy to store, track and retrieve the information you need to complete the tasks. The Ticker File would be very helpful. I hope to use this system.

I looked at the Google Calendar. Had to wait a minute or two to get in. My paper calendar is always right on my desk, waiting for me. I also looked at Remember the Milk site. Lists, reminders, share work with co-worker, and plan your time can all be done on this site. Get organize and have fun while you do it. ( It is still work) Again my paper calendar is on my desk. Yes, I know not everything can be done with my paper calendar. But for me, my paper calendar does what I need it to do. I also checkout the Ta-Da List. All these sites are great. A person can make list, setup reminders, organize meeting, but if you do not take the time to look at the site at least once a day( or more) none of this planning will help. And I have learned alot of new, interesting and fun things. From Internet Safety to blobbing, making a meeze, learning about Del.cio.us, Zoho, and YouTube. And much more. All of this has been new to me. Can I do it again. Well, maybe, after I review my notes. But I now know all this is out there in computer space ( and much, much more) What was the best. Having my own blog, and bloglines. Making a meeze was great fun. I hope to get back on Zoho and learn more about it. Learning about mashups, Library Thing and Elf was good too.

What was hard about iHCPL was finding the time to work on it. ( and I thought this would not be a problem but it was) One lesson a week would have been more my speed. But when I had to work on 3 lessons a week, it was a problem. I had a hard time finding 2 to 3 hours extra at work a week to get the lessons done. Overall it was a good program. Learned alot of interesting things. Librivox deals with audiobooks that are in Public Domain. Volunteers read the books. Lots of classics in Librivox. And you can get an RSS link. I Watched the Help with WOWIO tour. I did not know sites like Librivox and WOWIO were out there on the web.

HCPL's digital media site is full of so many new, interesting, and fun items. I watched the Digital Media Guide Tour. I found many things I was interested in. "The Good Cookie:.....", "Quick Family Meals in No Time" and "Your Planet or Mine" are some of the items I liked. One more way to communicate with a group of people. You can put your information out there in computer space and anyone can listen or watch it. I do not understand who has time to listen to all of this INFORMATION!?! I know you can pick around and listen to just what might interest you. But just finding information on one subject takes time. I RSS to Kankalee Public Library Podcast. I listen to some of the information they were passing on. But I got bored. Again you have to be careful with the information, is it correct or not, who is really the source, and is the information timely.

Just like YouTube, a company can put out information about the company or new services and let people discover it on Podcast. And I do think the more we(libraries) keep current with technology, the stronger the library system will be.
All for now!

Week 7 post 16

I now have a login for ihcpl wiki. And I have added my blog to the favorite blogs page.

The most interesting facts about a wiki account is that it can be changed or updated by anyone out there in the internet world. This is a good and bad feature. If the wiki is for a group project, updating, communicating and discussing the project is easy for each person in the group. If the wiki is about one subject, with facts on the subject, the question is, who is the person writing the wiki and are all the facts true or not. This could be a big problem in the long run for people who might not know this. But if a group of people on a committee, working together, a wiki would be a great way to communicate with each member within the group. This is all new to me. I have not heard of library 2.0 before this. Some new ideas for me and some old ones.

With Library 2.0 library services are constantly updated and reevaluated to best serve library users. This is from Library 2.0. This is an old idea to me. All the Library systems I have worked for in the past (and now) have always worked very hard to be current with technology, resources, etc. Money has always been a problem. And I think money will always be a problem. New technology and resources can be a great expense. And the question is how up-to-date can we(HCPL) go.

The key principles of Library 2.0 are not just about access to books and information. It is about innovation, about people, and about community building, enabled through the participation that social computing brings. This is also from Libraray 2.0. Social Computing is a new term for me. At this time I do not understand this term . I will have to read more about.

What I do understand about Library2.0 is that libraries should be in constant motion. Always looking for the newest resources out in the world. And open to new ways of doing things and servicing the public.

Week 6 post 14

Got into Technorati. Sooo Much information!! I did a search by Blog Post on learning 2.0 and I got 127 hits. With Blog Directory, I got 311 hits on the same search. The hits with Blog Directory was more on the business of learning 2.0. While with Blog Post, chatting about learning 2.0 was more on the fun side. I also looked at adding a link to my bookmark toolbar for Technorati. I decided not to do it. And I am afraid of a little code you can configure for automatic pinging. I will not be doing ping.
